Volunteers at Mac’s Mission worked patiently to free the little dog from the coat that had concealed her body. With scissors and clippers, they removed the dense tangles until she could finally be seen clearly.

They named her Pear. One eye was missing, and scars marked her skin, revealing injuries without explaining how they had happened. Removing the mats could not undo what she had endured, but it offered relief and a chance to receive the care she needed.

Afterward, Pear ate eagerly and settled into sleep, two ordinary comforts that made her transformation especially moving. Photographs carried her story far beyond the Missouri roadside where she had been found.
