12-year-old girl collapses and dies after fight with classmate straight off school bus
A Georgia community is searching for answers and calling for justice following the tragic death of Jada West, a 12-year-old student at Mason Creek Middle School who collapsed and died last week shortly after a physical confrontation with a peer.
The incident, which began on a school bus and escalated after students disembarked near West’s home, has left a family shattered and a school district defending its safety protocols.
A Walk Home Turned Fatal
According to witness accounts and local reports, the sequence of events began with a verbal argument between West and another female student during their afternoon commute. The dispute reportedly turned physical once the students exited the bus. Footage of the encounter, which has since been obtained by several U.S. media outlets, purportedly shows the two girls engaged in a fight in the street.
The conflict had reportedly concluded, and West was walking toward her residence when she suddenly collapsed. It was a friend who witnessed the collapse and ran to West’s home to alert her parents.
The 12-year-old was rushed to Tanner Medical Center before being transferred to Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta. Despite medical intervention, West succumbed to her injuries. An autopsy is currently pending to determine the exact cause of death and whether it was directly linked to the physical altercation.
A Family Seeking Justice
For West’s mother, Rashuna McLendon, the loss is unfathomable. Speaking to Fox 5 Atlanta, McLendon described the harrowing moment she found her daughter.
“I don’t understand. And she was on the ground, she wasn’t breathing,” McLendon said. “I’m so angry. We have to teach our children to love.”
The family revealed that West was a new student at Mason Creek Middle School and alleged that she had been the victim of bullying prior to the incident. As the investigation continues, West’s aunt emphasized that the family will not let the 12-year-old’s memory fade.
“We just want justice for my niece,” she stated. “This has got to stop. And we are going to keep saying Jada West’s name.”
School District and Law Enforcement Response
The Douglas County School System (DCSS) issued a formal statement expressing deep sadness over the loss, while also clarifying the boundaries of their jurisdiction regarding the event.
“The Douglas County School System is deeply saddened by the passing of a student at Mason Creek Middle School,” the statement read. “We extend our heartfelt condolences and prayers to her family and loved ones during this difficult time. She will be remembered by her teachers, her classmates, and all who knew her.”
The district addressed the location of the fight, noting that because the incident occurred off-campus and after school hours, the investigation remains in the hands of the Villa Rica Police Department.
“Any situation that results in harm to a child is one we take with the highest level of urgency,” the district continued. “This incident did not occur on school property or during school hours, and there is nothing to indicate that this is related to any on-campus activity.”
Support for a Grieving Community
In response to the tragedy, DCSS deployed a crisis team—including psychologists and counselors—to Mason Creek Middle School this past Tuesday. The team is intended to provide a supportive space for students and staff grappling with the loss.
“We recognize that this loss is being felt deeply across our school community,” the district stated, reaffirming its commitment to providing a safe environment for all students.
