“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” star dies at 54 – cause of death revealed

According to a report by the Hollywood Reporter, Brendon’s family confirmed the actor passed away on Friday, March 20. The cause of death has been attributed to natural causes.

A Family in Mourning
In a poignant statement released by his kin, the family expressed the depth of their grief while highlighting the multi-faceted nature of a man often defined by his early Hollywood success.

“We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon,” the statement began. “He passed in his sleep of natural causes. Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was.”

The family also addressed Brendon’s well-documented personal battles with candor, noting his efforts to find stability in his final years.

“While it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing. Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart. Thank you to everyone who has shown love and support.”

From Sunnydale to the Canvas
Brendon was a foundational element of the “Scooby Gang,” appearing in all seven seasons of Buffy from 1997 to 2003. His character, Xander, served as the “heart” of the show—the vulnerable, human anchor in a world of supernatural chaos. Following the series’ conclusion, Brendon remained active in the industry, taking on various film and television roles through 2021.

However, his life away from the spotlight was frequently marred by turbulence. Brendon faced several high-profile legal issues and public struggles with mental illness and substance abuse. His history included multiple arrests on charges ranging from felony vandalism and criminal mischief to resisting officers and felony corporal injury to a spouse.

A History of Health Struggles
In the years leading up to his death, Brendon’s physical health began to mirror his emotional volatility. In 2023, he revealed he had suffered a heart attack and was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect.

The Hollywood Reporter also noted that Brendon suffered from cauda equina syndrome—a severe medical condition involving the compression of nerve roots at the base of the spinal cord. The condition necessitated a series of invasive spinal surgeries, which reportedly contributed to the actor’s physical decline.

A Tribute from the Slayer
The news of Brendon’s passing prompted an emotional response from his former co-star, Sarah Michelle Gellar. Taking to social media, Gellar shared a nostalgic 1998 photograph of the pair during the height of the show’s popularity.

In her tribute, Gellar invoked one of Xander’s most poignant and self-aware monologues from the series:

“‘They’ll never know how tough it is to be the one who isn’t chosen. To live so near to the spotlight, and never step in it. But I know. I see more than anybody realises, because nobody’s watching me,’” she quoted.

Adding her own words to the character’s legacy, Gellar wrote: “I saw you Nicky. I know you are at peace, in that big rocking chair in the sky.”

Nicholas Brendon leaves behind a legacy of a complex man who, despite his shadows, remained a beloved figure to a generation of fans.
