‘Gomer Pyle’ Star Ronnie Schell Dies at 94

Ronald “Ronnie” Ralph Schell, the veteran actor and comedian best known for playing Duke Slater on the beloved 1960s sitcom Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., has died at the age of 94.

Schell died of natural causes on June 12 at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, according to his representative.

Born in Richmond, California, in 1931, Schell began his career as a stand-up comedian while attending San Francisco State University. He performed at the famous Purple Onion nightclub before taking his comedy act to clubs and Las Vegas.

His first television appearance came on You Bet Your Life, hosted by legendary comedian Groucho Marx.

Schell found his breakthrough role as Duke Slater, Gomer Pyle’s loyal friend, on Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., appearing on the series from 1964 to 1969. The sitcom, a spinoff of The Andy Griffith Show, starred Jim Nabors as the kind-hearted Gomer Pyle and Frank Sutton as his tough drill instructor, Sergeant Vince Carter.

Over a career spanning more than six decades, Schell appeared in nearly 150 television productions, including That Girl, Sanford and Son, Charlie’s Angels, Mork & Mindy, General Hospital, and Phil of the Future.

He also appeared in more than 20 films and built an impressive voice-acting career, lending his voice to projects including Jetsons: The Movie and Rover Dangerfield.

Even in his later years, Schell continued performing, including a role in the 2019 Off-Broadway musical revue Don’t Leave It All to Your Children!.

Ronnie Schell is survived by his wife, Janet, his sons Gregory and Christian, and his granddaughter, Chiara.

His career left behind decades of laughter and memorable television moments that generations of viewers continue to remember.
