Legendary Actress Mitzi Gaynor Dies at 93

Actress, singer, and dancer Mitzi Gaynor has passed away peacefully from natural causes at the age of 93. Her management team confirmed her death on October 17.

Born Francesca Marlene de Czanyi von Gerber in Chicago in 1931, Gaynor grew up in a creative family and trained in dance from a young age. She moved to Los Angeles as a child and eventually began performing professionally.

Her Hollywood breakthrough came in the 1950s, with roles in films including There’s No Business Like Show Business alongside Marilyn Monroe and The Birds and the Bees. But her most iconic performance came in 1958, when she played Ensign Nellie Forbush in South Pacific, which became a major success.

As movie musicals declined, Gaynor successfully moved into live entertainment, performing in Las Vegas and touring with shows combining singing, dancing, and comedy. She also became a television favorite through her popular musical variety specials during the 1960s and 1970s.

Gaynor appeared on shows including The Ed Sullivan Show, The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, and The Donald O’Connor Show. She also performed alongside stars such as Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, and Danny Thomas.

One memorable moment came in 1964 when Gaynor appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show during the same episode as The Beatles. After the taping, Paul McCartney reportedly asked Mitzi Gaynor for her autograph.

She married talent agent Jack Bean in 1954, and they remained together until his death in 2006.

Mitzi Gaynor leaves behind a remarkable legacy in Hollywood, television, music, and live entertainment.
