Former NFL Defensive Star Aldon Smith Dies at 36

Former All-Pro pass rusher Aldon Smith has died at the age of 36, according to the San Francisco 49ers.

The 49ers selected Smith with the seventh overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, and he immediately showed why he was considered one of the league’s most promising young defenders.

As a rookie, Smith recorded 14 sacks. The following season, he exploded for 19.5 sacks, earning Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro honors while helping San Francisco reach the Super Bowl.

At just 23 years old, he appeared to be on a path toward becoming one of the NFL’s greatest pass rushers.

But his career was repeatedly interrupted by serious off-field struggles, legal issues and substance-abuse problems.

After leaving San Francisco, Smith had stints with the Oakland Raiders and Dallas Cowboys. His 2020 return with Dallas was one of the most remarkable moments of his later career, as he recorded five sacks after spending several years away from the NFL.

His journey was ultimately remembered as one of extraordinary talent, enormous promise and difficult personal struggles.

The 49ers described Smith as more than a great football player, remembering his infectious smile and the impact he had on those around him.
