Uncle Suffered Severe Burns After Running Into Burning Home to Save 8-Year-Old Niece

When a fire broke out inside a family home in Aberdeen, Washington, 20-year-old Derrick Byrd was faced with an impossible choice.

His young nephews managed to escape by jumping from a second-floor window. But his 8-year-old niece, Mercedes, was too frightened to jump.

So Derrick ran back inside.

He knew the flames were spreading, but he wasn’t willing to leave her behind.

“I could feel it burning me,” he later recalled.

Derrick reached Mercedes, removed his shirt and wrapped it around her face to protect her from the smoke. Then he carried her out of the burning house.

He suffered second- and third-degree burns to his face, back and arms.

But when people called him a hero, Derrick didn’t see it that way.

He simply said he wasn’t going to let his niece and nephews die.

And when asked if he would do it again, his answer was immediate:

“I’d run back in there and do it again.”

A young man put his own life at risk to save a child—and walked away carrying her to safety. ❤️‍🩹
