Beloved Indigenous Actor and Filmmaker Dies Following Tragic Rodeo Incident 💔

Georgina Lightning, a celebrated Indigenous actor, filmmaker and advocate, has died at 63 following a tragic incident at a rodeo event in Alberta.

Lightning was attending the Indian Relay event at the Enoch Rodeo Grounds on September 5 while filming a documentary. According to RCMP, she was taking photographs from a media area when a horse reportedly veered off course and struck her. Despite efforts by paramedics, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

But Lightning’s legacy was far greater than the heartbreaking circumstances of her death.

She spent more than three decades working in film and television, appearing in projects including Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, The West Wing, Walker, Texas Ranger, Trickster, Three Pines and Land. She also appeared in the 2025 film Die, My Love.

Behind the camera, she made history in 2008 by writing, directing and starring in Older Than America, becoming the first North American Indigenous woman to direct a major feature film.

Her daughter Crystle shared an emotional tribute, calling her mother her “matriarch, role model and confidant.”
