Legendary ZZ Top Drummer Frank Beard Dies at 77

The legendary rock world has lost one of its most familiar faces.

Frank Beard, the longtime drummer of ZZ Top, has died at 77.

Beard died while receiving hospice care at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, surrounded by family. A cause of death was not immediately released.

For more than five decades, Beard sat behind the drums of ZZ Top, helping create the powerful blues-rock sound that made the Texas band famous around the world.

He played on some of the group’s biggest hits, including “Sharp Dressed Man,” “Legs” and “Gimme All Your Lovin’.”

Beard joined Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill in 1970, forming what became one of the longest-lasting lineups in rock history.

The band went on to become massive MTV stars in the 1980s, especially after the release of Eliminator.

There was also a funny irony about Beard’s famous appearance.

Despite being named “Beard,” he was the only member of ZZ Top who didn’t have the giant beard.

Gibbons and Hill became instantly recognizable for their enormous facial hair, while Beard remained clean-shaven.

ZZ Top was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, cementing the group’s place in music history.

The classic trio finally changed in 2021 when bassist Dusty Hill died at 72. Beard continued performing with ZZ Top and ultimately spent approximately 56 years with the band.

His steady drumming became part of the soundtrack of generations of rock fans.

Now, another chapter of ZZ Top’s incredible story has come to an end.
