An 85-year-old widow went on a blind date with a 90-year-old man. When she returned to her daughter’s house later that night, she looked anything but delighted. Naturally, her daughter wanted to know how the evening had gone—and what could possibly have happened to leave her mother so upset. “What happened, Mother?” she asked. The widow wasted no time getting to the point: “I had to slap his face three times!” That certainly wasn’t the answer her daughter had expected from a night that was supposed to be about companionship.

Her daughter immediately imagined a gentleman whose manners had deserted him. “You mean he got fresh?” she asked. But her mother’s complaint had nothing to do with unwanted advances. “No,” the widow answered. “I thought he was dead!” Forget butterflies and romantic sparks: apparently, this particular date had left her more concerned about signs of life.
