Owner of Sampson County kennel grieving after about 30 dogs die in fire

GODWIN, N.C. (WNCN) — The owner of a kennel in Sampson County is mourning the loss of about 30 dogs who died in a fire Wednesday night.

The fire happened at Black Creek Kennels, which has been owned by Todd Wrench and his wife Sharlene for over 25 years.

“A little hopeless I guess is a good word,” Wrench said.

According to Wrench, he was driving home from choir practice with his wife when he noticed the flames. They quickly jumped into action to save as many dogs as possible from the outer sides of the building and rescued 20 dogs, only a few of whom have minor burns.

“It was so hot,” Wrench said. “The fire was so strong and so engulfed, there was no way we could get into the center.”

Wrench said he believes 30 dogs were left in the building, including three mothers and their puppies, whose breeds ranging from Cocker Spaniels, Boxers and mini-Dachshunds.

“The pups over the years have become like family,” Wrench said. “It’s a hard thing to face.”PREVIOUS COVERAGE: About 30 dog die in massive kennel fire in Sampson County, officials say

According to Sampson County Fire Marshal’s Office, the building collapsed before emergency responders arrived. It took nearly three hours to fully extinguish the flames.

Wrench said he is thankful for the communities outpouring love and support while he leans into his faith before the rebuild.

“People have to understand that even things happen to folks who try to be as straight and good as they can,” Wrench said. “You just have to roll with it.”
